The Governing Board of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Tiruchi, has constituted a Finance Committee, paving way for the institution to fasttrack work on establishment of its permanent campus and fill the sanctioned strength of permanent faculties at Sethurapatti on the outskirts.

The first meeting of the Finance Committee is expected to take place in Chennai later this month. The Finance Committee was formed after the Ministry of Human Resource Development appointed N.V.S.N. Sarma as full-time Director of IIIT Tiruchi last month.

Established under the non-profit Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model by MHRD, the IIIT-T, an institute of national importance, is funded by Government of India, Government of Tamil Nadu and Industry Partners in the ratio of 50:35:15. Industry partners include Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), Infosys, Ramco Systems, ELCOT, and Navitas (TAKE Solutions).

IIIT Tiruchi has been operating out of the campus of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchi, its mentor institution, since March 2016. The permanent facility for IIIT-T, one of the pet projects of late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, is to be established at Sethurapatti on a little over 56-acre land area, at an estimated cost of ₹ 128 crore.

The MHRD had envisaged completion of the project over a nine-year duration before 2019-20. The work on construction of a compound wall was initiated last year after the State Revenue Department transferred ownership of the land to the IIIT Tiruchi Society for establishing the permanent campus.

The overall student strength is 210. The intake will go up substatially through start of additional B.Tech programmes and M. Tech programmes, once the IIIT Tiruchi moves to its permanent facility, sources said.

The Central Public Works Department has been informed about the infrastructure required in the first phase that include hostel buildings that can accommodate 600 boys and 200 girls.

Admission to the two B.Tech programmes at IIIT Tiruchi is based on the ranking in the Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main).
