TRICHY: Thillai Nagar, the commercial hub of Trichy, will soon get a new three-tier commercial complex with a covered builtup area of 51,000 square feet under the Smart Cities mission. Trichy city corporation has taken up the construction work at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore after demolishing an old commercial complex building there.

Corporation sources said that a commercial complex was constructed in the 7th cross of Thillai Nagar in 1972 in commemoration of the centenary of the erstwhile Trichy municipality. The civic body was earning only Rs 25,000 per month from the eight shops and space rented out to police, postal department, and a Public Distribution System (PDS) outlet. There were plans since 2013 to demolish and construct a new commercial building in the 31,000 square feet space. But, the city corporation moved the proposal under smart cities mission and managed to receive Rs 15 crore under the mission last year. Subsequently, it got permission to set up a three-tier commercial complex at Thillai Nagar 7th cross and the civil work started weeks ago.

The basement is earmarked for car parking. The ground floor and first floor together will have 40 shops, while the second floor will accommodate six office space units and a mini meeting hall. The third floor will also have office space.

“The old structure was completely demolished. The foundation work for the new complex is progressing. We will complete the facility within two years,” an official source with the civic body said. As there has been high demand for office space from startups and BPOs in Thillai Nagar, the civic body said that the second and third floors of the building were allotted for customised office space. Parking space for as many as 55 cars will be provided in the facility. However, it seems that the parking space is not futuristic as it has limited space compared to the office and commercial space. By renting 15 office space units and 40 commercial shop units, the corporation could generate Rs 14.75 lakh as revenue per month. The commercial complex would generate employment for at least 15 people to maintain the facility.
