IIM-Trichy offers MBA course in Chennai on weekends

CHENNAI: Are you among the thousands of working professionals in Chennai wishing to pursue an MBA programme but unable to take a career break due to financial constraints? Indian Institute of Management, Trichy, one of country's top business schools, has a solution.

The institute will be offering a two-year business programme at its Chennai campus at Ekkattuthangal during weekends.

Speaking to TOI here on Sunday, Bhimaraya Metri, director, IIM-T, said the programme would help junior-level employees sharpen their skills so that they can go up in career. Except for young engineers, working professionals in other sectors, aged 30-50, hesitate to take a break and pursue an MBA degree, more so if they are the sole breadwinners.

IIM-T weekend classes (Friday 7pm-10pm, Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 9am-1pm) have helped such candidates. Sharing his experience, R Nandakumar, chief executive officer of a private consulting firm, said, "I was earlier conversing only with operations managers. Now, I can interact directly with my board of directors and the IIM tag has helped me a lot in this aspect".

"Unlike a conventional two-year programme, this course is unique as it involves a lot more real-life case studies and interactions with professionals from different sectors and functions like manufacturing, quality, human resource and supply chain management. But one should be ready to sacrifice weekends, holidays and dedicate 104 weekends," said Nandakumar, who joined the course at the age of 50.

Strength of each batch has been capped at 45 and those with at least five years of experience are preferred. It will cost 10-12 lakh to complete the course.

Metri said a few corporate including L&T, Saint-Gobain and Neyveli Lignite Corporation had approached IIM-T to conduct similar programs for their high performers. "Also, IIM-T will be conducting executive MBA programmes for defence personnel who are willing to take up civil jobs after their tenure ends," he added.
