TRICHY: As many as 27 out of the total 555 new model government buses launched by Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday were allotted for Trichy region of Kumbakonam TNSTC division. Since the new model buses yet again were earmarked only for mofussil routes, locals sought the swanky model buses to be introduced in city routes particularly connecting the international airport here.

According to TNSTC Trichy region, state transport corporation has already launched 52 new model buses in the region covering Trichy city, Manapparai and Thuraiyur towns. However, of the total 52 new model buses introduced so far, only one such bus was allotted for city route earlier connecting KK Nagar with Srirangam.

While public here anticipated new model buses to be launched in city routes this time, not even a single bus was assigned for city routes in the third batch of new buses inducted on Monday.

“A few of the new model buses could have been used for connecting the city’s tourist spots with the international airport to project good opinion about city among visitors. Outdated city buses should be replaced,” K Shyam Sundar, a resident of Thiruverumbur added.

TNSTC Trichy region sources said 27 new model buses assigned for the region would be utilised to connect Salem, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Madurai cities.
