ISRO to set up Space Technology Incubation Centre in Tiruchi

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has a plan to start one of its six Space Technology Incubation Centres in Tiruchi.

Disclosing this while addressing the Graduation Day of St. Joseph's College here on Sunday, K. Sivan, ISRO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India, said the plan was to promote space technology in unrepresented areas of the country which has Research and Development potential. Incubation centres for the entire north-eastern States at NIT-Agartala and at Jammu and Kashmir were inaugurated in 2018. The ISRO will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach in solving problems.

Dr. Sivan shared that the ISRO will launch GSAT-20 next year. The GSAT series of satellites will provide 100 Gigabits Per Second.

The national confidence in ISRO is reflected in the highest ever allocation of about ₹ 30,000 crore for 23 new and continuing programmes in a single year, he said.

Terming Chandrayan - 2 mission a calculated risk, he said it has been planned within the next three months. The landing site will be above 70 degree latitude where no one else has gone before, he said.

Dr. Sivan also emphasised on effective intervention for reduction in import of electronics items, referring to the projection that the import of the product was expected to increase to 400 billion US dollars by 2020, as against the domestic production worth 104 billion dollars.

Now that the Central Government has approved ₹ 10,900 crore for 30 PSLVs and 10 GSLV MK-III in the next four years, more than 50 spacecraft will be launched during the next four years. There was a major opportunity for indigenisation of avionics, Dr. Sivan said.

The chief guest conferred degrees on 1,798 candidates in the presence of the Principal Rev. Fr. M. Arokiasamy Xaiver.
