Defence Ministry envisages vital role for NIT-T

Secretary of Defence Production Ajay Kumar visited National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T) on Sunday to explore scope for research collaboration.

After taking part in the function organised by the Defence Ministry for launch of projects under the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor scheme, Mr. Ajay Kumar held a meeting with the Director of NIT-T Mini Shaji Thomas and senior faculty members to with the purpose of creating a channel of communication with the Defence Ministry.

The Secretary of Defence Production who spent a few hours in the campus was impressed by the Siemens Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing that was inaugurated a few months back by Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javdekar.

The Centre could be utilised by industries manufacturing defence components to design, test and validate their products, Prof. Mini Shaji Thomas said.

The NIT-T, she said, had been mandated with the task of interacting with Ordnance Factory Board, Bharat Earth Movers Limited and other defence public sector undertakings coming under the defence production sector.

"We are in talks with the Ordnance Factory, Tiruchi, to develop new products," she said, adding that the institute will be submitting a few projects to the Defence Ministry to begin with.

“Projects will be carried out by students based on which products will be developed.”

Defence equipment that requires scores of small components are to be manufactured by small and medium industries.
