Work set to begin on Rs. 17.56-cr. Uyyakondan project

The Tiruchi City Corporation is all set to start the construction work of Uyyakondan Riverfront Development project.

A sum of Rs. 17.56 crore has been earmarked for the project, for which the High Power Committee of Tiruchi Smart City Ltd had already given its nod.

N. Ravichandran, Commissioner cum Special Officer, N. Ravichandran, toldThe Hinduthat tendering process for identifying suitable firm to execute the project would be completed soon. Evaluation and competency of the firms, which had evinced interest to implement the project, was on it. The process would be completed within a week. Work order would be given to the successful bidder shortly.

As per the proposal, he said about 2.1 km stretch along the Uyyakondan Canal from Kuzhumayi Amman temple to MGR statue would get a complete facelift. Walkways and green space would be provided by improving retaining wall. Roads on both the banks of the canal would be developed to improve the mobility and connectivity. Construction of jogging, walking and pedestrian pathways were among the proposed plan.

Mr. Ravichandran said that an open stage with amphitheatre would also be constructed on the left bank of the canal to conduct art and cultural shows. It could accommodate about 200 persons.

It had been planned to construct an electronic toilet. It would be the highlight of the riverfront development project. It had been decided to make e-toilet a user friendly. Public could use it by inserting a coin. It would be a model in public health, hygiene and sanitation. It was a convergence of electronics, mechanical, web-mobile technologies thereby controlling entry, usage, cleaning and exit, he said
