After a long search, the Social Welfare Department has identified a land for constructing a working women’s hostel in Tiruchi.

In order to improve the safety, security and living conditions of working women, the government sanctioned a hostel in Tiruchi in 2013 and allotted Rs. 1 crore for the project.

Officials began search for a suitable site to house the hostel. Although it shortlisted a couple of sites within the city limits, it could not take a decision due to various reasons including insufficient space and litigation. The importance of choosing the right site in the heart of the city to enable working women easy access also led to the delay.

The long search has come to an end with the intervention of Collector K. Rajamani. After studying various options, he instructed revenue officials to allot a site near Tiruchi (West) Taluk Office on Bharathidasan Road for the project.

The encroachment on a portion of the site has been cleared and, subsequently, the land been formally handed over to the Social Welfare Department.

Mr. Rajamani toldThe Hinduthat the proposed site was located at the centre of the city. Moreover, there were a number of government and private offices around the site. It would enable women working in various offices to reach their respective offices and vice versa. It had good transport connectivity.

He said the Public Works department (Buildings), which had been asked to take up construction work, had prepared a revised estimate for the project. Construction was expected to cost Rs. 1.5 crore. A Government Order was expected soon.
