Passenger terminal work begins at airport

Civil works for construction of a new two-level modular integrated passenger terminal has begun at the airport here to complete the project in three years as scheduled.

The ITD Cementation India Limited, the company to which the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had issued Letter of Intent to carry out the project, has put in place necessary logistics and machinery required to carry out the work. It has set up site office and yard.

The AAI has sanctioned Rs. 950 crore to construct a passenger terminal, apron and a technical block-cum-air traffic control tower. Of this, Rs. 872 crore has been allocated to construct terminal on 61,000 square metres near the existing terminal building. A senior official said on Friday that laying of foundation for the passenger terminal and apron has begun. The work has been kick-started after sanction of funds and obtaining all clearances. The work is being carried out under the supervision of the AAI.

The terminal building would be a fully airconditioned modular structure to handle 3.63 million passengers per annum on full capacity and 2,900 passengers at peak hour with provision for expansion. The terminal has been designed by Egis India Consulting Engineers Private Limited taking into account the heritage and culture of Tiruchi.

The official said the construction of the apron which would be in a position to accommodate 10 aircraft at a time would be completed ahead of the passenger terminal.

The terminal was required in the wake of sharp rise in passenger traffic at the airport over the years.
