Corporation to open e-waste collection centre in Tiruchi

The Tiruchi Corporation would soon open an e-waste collection centre to streamline collection and disposal of electronic waste.

The infrastructure for the collection centre, to be run by an authorised agency, is being created at Thennur. Electronic waste or e-waste includes old and discarded electrical and electronic appliances such as telephones, mobile phones, computers, laptops, television sets, refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners and lamps.

Residents can hand over the e-waste at the collection centre being established under the road overbridge near Tangedco Office at Thennur. Tyey will be paid depending on the handed over item.

Normally, e-waste items are disposed by residents to scrap dealers who process or recycle the items. “Every household has such items. There is a need to streamline the collection and disposal of e-waste,” said Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran.

Residents can hand over the e-waste to the centre. If some people or institutions have e-waste in bulk, pick-up could be arranged.

Mr. Ravichandran said the civic body was in discussion with a Bengaluru-based private agency to run the collection centre.

“The process is in the initial stage. We are studying the required documents submitted by the agency. The centre could become functional towards the end of January,” Mr. Ravichandran said and pointed out that the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the e-Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the rules had come into force.

The establishment of the collection centre is also expected to help prevent misuse of the space beneath the road overbridge. “We are glad that the space is being used for a public purpose. We hope it will prevent the space beneath the bridge being misused by encroachers and antisocials,”said N. Kuppan Chetti, a resident of Anna Nagar.

Other problems

Residents have also been clamouring for preventing indiscriminate parking of vehicles along the service lanes beneath the bridge as it was causing much congestion. The service lanes were also in poor condition at some of the stretches, residents complain. Mr.Ravichandran assured that the service roads would be relaid soon.
