City's green-cover initiative reaches half-way mark

Trichy: The civic body’s green drive to promote Trichy’s green cover by planting one lakh native tree saplings in a year touched half-way mark on Saturday. As a part of the initiative launched in June this year, 80 tree saplings sponsored by Trichy Corporation were planted in Seshasayee Institute of Technology (SIT) in Ariyamangalam. Locals and Residents Welfare Association (RWA) in the locality also took a pledge to maintain the saplings.
Commemorating the World Environment Day that falls on June 5 every year, corporation, six months back, had announced a plan to raise one lakh tree saplings across the 65 wards of the city by June 5, 2019.

To cater the requirements of tree saplings, as the civic body opened two nurseries on East Boulevard and Srirangam respectively, officials said that 50,000 tree saplings sourced by the nurseries were planted across the four zones of the city.

Meanwhile, in a tree plantation event held at Ariyamangalam, corporation commissioner, N Ravichandran addressed the residents and morning walkers at SIT college ground and urged them to take care of the saplings planted.

“RWAs and residents should come forward to water and maintain the saplings planted for sustaining the plan to increase city’s green cover,” Ravichandran told the Ganapathy Nagar residents.

Explaining the efforts taken up by corporation to encourage recycling of waste at households, the civic body officials also held an awareness session for the residents to avoid littering on streets.

Later, as many as 200 residents participated in a community cleaning event at Ganapathy Nagar streets on Saturday.
