Tiruchi junction gets green rating

Tiruchi railway junction has bagged ‘Green Rating’ from the Confederation of India Industry (CII).

The CII has sent a communication to the Tiruchi divisional railway authorities to this effect. Tiruchi Junction is the only ‘A’ category station falling under the jurisdiction of the Southern Railway to receive this rating.

A CII team conducted a detailed inspection to check whether it adhered to prescribed standards and requirements for the green rating. The team checked passenger amenities, overall cleanliness within the station and circulating areas, energy efficiency measures, traffic movement at the station and its vicinity and green initiatives in practice.

Divisional Railway Manager P. Uday Kumar Reddy told The Hindu on Thursday that the rating system was evolved by the CII on a request from the Environment and Health Management Directorate of the Railway Board.

Tiruchi is one of the major stations in the Southern Railway that witnesses heavy movement of passenger and freight traffic throughout the day and night.

Given the heavy rush of passengers, especially in the morning and night, Railway Protection Force personnel take action against those sullying the station premises under Indian Railways (Penalties for activities affecting cleanliness at Railway Premises) Rules, 2012. A total fine of Rs. 99,800 was collected from 476 passengers between January 1 and October 31 this year, said RPF sources.
