Trichy: Stating that China and Japan are the new Silicon Valley which are heavily investing on sophisticated technology, Enrico Beltramini, faculty from Notre Dame de Namur University (USA), advised students to stay up-to-date with the changing trends to stay relevant, while exposing them to technology start-ups.
Addressing students of St Joseph’s Institute of Management (JIM) on innovations in start-ups, he asked students to acquire knowledge to re-frame business problems into technology problems and fix it.

While stating that China is way ahead of the USA in the area of artificial intelligence research, he said the level of sophistication in this field has been phenomenal in recent years. The Chinese government is heavily investing just like the USA, he added.

“It not the Silicon Valley that India should fear, but China and Japan who are progressing at a faster pace,” he said.

Sharing about some of the finest starts-ups in the Silicon Valley, Beltramini explained how he invested in about 64 technology start-ups from about 5,000 ideas that he came across over the last one decade from entrepreneurs.

He said ideas that have the tendency to solve problems pump in funds and asked students to develop the ability to accomplish complex goals.

He also said that innovation is adversely affecting the labour market and students need to toil hard to get a job.

On being asked if artificial intelligence would replace human capabilities, while giving the example of self-driving cars, he said it is possible in the coming years given the kind of innovations happening across the world.

On a question if artificial intelligence can master the general ability of human beings, he said machines can be taught intelligent stuffs, but we will not be in their control.
