TRICHY: Owing to space crunch at the Siddha wing at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, the district administration is checking whether it will be feasible to construct a floor on top of the existing block or shift it to another location.

The officials from AYUSH department have for long expressed concerns regarding space crunch at the Siddha block. Officials said, currently they are only being able to treat roughly half the number of patients. They added that since the number of fever cases has also increased, space crunch is proving to be a bigger issue.

They claim that the current per-day outpatient demand is around 1,500 – for Siddha, homeopathy or Ayurveda treatment – out of which only 800 are being attended to.

District collector K Rajamani told TOI that the Siddha wing is in fact finding it difficult to accommodate all its patients and hence a solution would be found soon. “Works are on to see if it would be feasible to construct a new floor in the Siddha block, atop the existing one.” The collector added that if it would not be possible, then shifting it to a new place might be considered. The Siddha block currently has one floor for siddha, homeopathy and unani outpatients. Apart from this, external therapies like cupping, varma, autism therapy, thokkanam etc. are also carried out in the same building.

According to district Siddha medical officer Dr S Kamaraj, due to space crunch, external therapies have been restricted to certain days of a week rather than daily. Unani and its cupping therapy is done on Monday and Saturday, while varma, autism therapy and thokkanam are done from Tuesday to Thursday. “We will be able to provide external therapies if the space crunch is addressed,” he said.

A source from the AYUSH department told TOI that providing treatment for outpatients would become even more difficult from Monday when a special fever camp is slated to start. “Since there lack of adequate space to carry out the camp, we will be carrying out in the same room where antenatal care is provided for expectant mothers,” the source said.
