Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday had a word of appreciation for the “hard work” being put in by the officials in carrying out relief and restoration works in the cyclone-affected Nagapattinam district.

“I found they have been working hard without rest,” Mr. Purohit said in a brief interaction with mediapersons while inspecting the damage caused by cyclone Gaja and the relief measures launched by the State government in the district on Wednesday. He said that some people wanted tarpaulin and money (compensation). “I told the administration …. I think within three, four days everything will reach the people,” he said.

The Governor inspected the damage in Vedaranyam, Thalaignayiru, Velankanni, Kameswaraam, Kovilpathu, Vettaikaraniruppu, Vellapallam, Thopputhurai, and other places. He inspected a relief camp at Vedaranyam and tasted the food prepared for the people accommodated there.

On seeing that people were queuing up in Vedaranyam to get LPG refills, Mr. Purohit instructed Collector S. Suresh Kumar to organise additional supplies. A temporary distribution centre was set up, an official release said. The Governor, who is also the president of the Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu, handed over to the district officials Rs. 1 crore worth of relief materials mobilised by the society’s State branch.
