The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has readied the master plan for the campus of Indian Institute of Information Technology at Sethurapatti.

The National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T) had, earlier this year, conveyed to the CPWD the building requirements in the first phase that includes an academic block and two hostel buildings to accommodate 600 boys and 200 girls.

The plan will have to be approved by the local committee and the Board of Governors, before sanction of funds.

Work on construction of boundary wall is in progress. The permanent campus is coming up on a 56-acre area. At present, the IIIT - Tiruchi is functioning out of the campus of NIT-T with a student strength of 210.

The land was sanctioned with a main road to Sethurapatti passing across the campus. The assurance of Revenue Department at the time of sanction of land was that the road will be shifted outside the campus before the start of building works.

Accordingly, a new road is being laid along the boundary of the campus, sources said.

Once a permanent campus is in place, student intake will go up exponentially in the institution that was established by the MHRD under Not-for-Profit Public Private Partnership (N-PPP) basis with the Ministry, the State Government and industry as partners. The capital cost for the buildings and facilities was estimated to be Rs. 128 crore.
