Trichy: The city corporation is planning to further the penalty on traders and commercial establishments if they fail to comply with the norms on segregated waste collection. The proposal comes after authorities found mounds of waste on many commercial streets around Rockfort, Cantonment and Thillai Nagar on Wednesday, just a day after Diwali.
Stakeholders, residential or commercial establishments, have been told to segregate waste on their own. The garbage is handed over to the corporation workers who walk door-to-door, collecting waste as part of the segregated waste management introduced by the civic body. But many commercial establishments and traders failed to adhere to the norms especially on Diwali leading to a large pile of garbage.

The civic body workers, who were back to work on Wednesday, had a tough time removing the waste, as Tuesday was a holiday for them. Officials said a total of 449 tonnes of waste was collected from all the four zones and much of which contained packaging materials and plastic foils.

“We are left with no option but to hike the penalty on repeat offenders who fail to segregate waste at home and throw them to public space,” said N Ravichandran, special officer and commissioner of Trichy Corporation.

“Now that adequate time of over one year has been given to stakeholders to make segregated waste collection a habit, not mere a job. Many of them still continue to remain repeat offenders,” he said. While a nominal fine is collected from repeat offenders, it has been decided to increase the penalty to drive home the point that none can shirk their responsibility, the commissioner said.

Welcoming the move, honorary president of Trichy district Exnora, C Balasubramanian asked the city corporation to reinstate garbage bins at some places that were removed as part of door-to-door waste collection until adequate number of conservancy workers are employed to collect waste.
