CCTVs to be installed in Railway Hospital

The Railway Hospital at Ponmalai here, which serves railway employees, their dependants and retirees, would soon be brought under the scope of surveillance cameras-based monitoring system.

Acting on the direction of the Railway Board, the Tiruchi railway division authorities have planned to install surveillance cameras to monitor security and cleanliness round-the-clock. The Signal and Telecommunications Department of the Southern Railway has been entrusted with the task of installing the cameras and associated paraphernalia.

A railway official said 28 surveillance cameras would be installed at various spots in the hospital, which is located inside the sprawling Ponmalai Railway Colony opposite Golden Rock Railway Workshop.

The work will start soon and planned for completion by December-end.

This is the only railway hospital in Tiruchi division for which sanction had been accorded for installation of surveillance cameras. The need was felt after a doctor at a railway hospital in north India was assaulted a few months ago.

After the Railway Ministry reviewed the Health Care System on Indian Railways, it was decided to install CCTVs at zonal and divisional railway hospitals. It was also decided to establish Wi-Fi facility to enable teleconferencing with specialists in big centres for better patient care.

The more than 80-year-old Railway Hospital at Ponmalai has 197 beds with 19 medical experts of different specialities.

The hospital engages specialists from outside on a case-to-case basis.
