Trichy: The district central library on WB Road became a no-plastic zone from Monday. District library officer A P Siva Kumar said the initiative is aimed at creating awareness on the responsibility of individuals in conserving the environment.
Recognising the initiatives of the library administration, Trichy district Exnora (Excellent Novel and Radical), an environmental and civic movement, conferred the library administration with Clean and Green award.

Kumar said that the library is used by hundreds of locals daily. “Making the premises free from banned plastics below 50 microns will help spread the message among people,” he said.

“Security personnel at the library have been educated on helping people not to bring plastics inside the campus. While we have kept dustbins for those who bring along plastic, we are also taking steps to promote cloth bag as an alternative to plastics,” he added.

President of Trichy district Exnora C Balasubramanian said that all government offices and buildings should follow suit which would help in bringing down the use of plastics. He also requested the corporation commissioner and the district collector to take steps in this regard.

Speaking at the event, corporation commissioner N Ravichandran stressed on the need to make people sensitive towards the use of plastics. “Real change can be realised by bringing behavioural change among people and city corporation is working towards it,” he said.
