TRICHY: The Trichy Corporation has begun planting ornamental trees along the Anna Nagar link road adjacent to the banks of the Uyyakondan canal near district court as part of its drive to increase city’s green cover.
The civic body has planned to place stone benches beneath the ornamental trees to attract locals for spending leisure time there.

The corporation has partnered with Horticulture College and Research Institute for Women in Navalur Kuttapattu here to grow ornamental greeneries along the city roads.

Identifying the Anna Nagar link road as a viable spot to house decorative trees, the corporation procured two types of ornamental trees -- royal palm (roystonea regia) and foxtail palm (wodyetia) -- from a private farm in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, at an estimated cost of Rs 2 lakh.

On Monday, the civic body commenced planting 40 well grown royal palm trees close to the open gym in link road locality.

“Royal palm can grow up to 20 feet in height and can withstand the weather conditions of Trichy. The leaves of royal palm grow wider to provide shady ambience for people to rest under the trees,” said an assistant professor with Horticulture college here.

Corporation Commissioner N Ravichandran asserted that the ornamental trees were positioned in a manner not to affect and cause any inconvenience to overhead power cables.
