Trichy: National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy has been ranked 10th in the swachh campus ranking 2018 announced by Prakash Javadekar, human resource development (HRD) minister in New Delhi on Monday.
The institute has been awarded the rank in the category -- technical institution residential. The ranking was introduced by MHRD last year to encourage educational institutions to maintain cleanliness on campus.

They are judged on parameters like toilet adequacy and maintenance, garbage clearance systems and various other criteria.

Delighted to receive the award, NIT-Trichy director, Mini Shaji Thomas said that they are the only awardee among 31 NIT’s in the country to make it to the category and one among three public-funded institutions.

NIT-Trichy could not make it to the list of top 10 institutions last year and not a single public-run institution was in the list, she added.

“We are happy that we could make it this year. In fact, we were expected to be in the top five but the competition was tough and we slipped by just fraction of marks,” said the director.

We indeed gave a tough fight to institutions like IIT-Madras, which has 65% of its campus under green cover unlike us where we have 30% green cover only. IIT-Madras was ranked 8th in the category.

She said that the recognition would help them improve the cleanliness of campus, adding that they are now more aware of the parameters for the ranking and aim much better position next year.
