Seeking to give a push to the Smart City projects and sanitation initiatives during the monsoon season in the city, State Ministers Vellamandi N. Natarajan and S. Valarmathi conducted a review of the works with civic officials here on Monday.

The meeting, lasting nearly two hours, focussed on the pace of the development works sanctioned under the Smart City project, extension of the underground drainage network to omitted areas and sanitation works. Corporation officials led by N. Ravichandran, Special Officer-cum-Commissioner, made a presentation on ongoing development projects and explained the salient features.

In a brief interaction with media later, Mr. Natarajan said the main focus of the discussions was on the Smart City projects and the measures to be taken to improve sanitation in all 65 wards of the city during the monsoon season. “We discussed the time line for the works being taken up with the funds sanctioned by the government under the Smart City Project,” he said.

The Ministers instructed the officials to expedite the extension of the underground drainage scheme to omitted areas and ensure that sewerage from households was not let out into open drains. They also discussed the number of sanitary workers to be deployed in each ward and the need for proper supervision of the work done by them and suggested publicising the telephone numbers of the sanitary supervisors so that residents could contact them directly.
