In order to attract more citizens towards plogging, a new initiative of picking up litter while jogging in groups, Tiruchi City Corporation organised a drive across the city on Tuesday.

Volunteers, college students, representatives of residents welfare associations, flat dwellers' associations, police personnel and officials of various departments collected litter while jogging.

Collector K. Rajamani, who kicked off the drive organised on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi at Khajamalai, joined with volunteers and collected trash along the race course and Anna stadium.

Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi, A. Amalraj, Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran, Clean Tiruchi brand ambassador of Tiruchi Corporation James Vasanthan (music director), C. Gopinath (television anchor) and actor Athi participated in the drive.

Mr. Ravichandran said about 5,000 citizens took part in the special plogging drive. It was organised in all 65 wards simultaneously. As per initial estimate, about five tonnes of garbage, mainly plastic bags and use and throw items, were collected.

He said plogging was organised for the first time in Tiruchi in the third week of April and it had become a routine. A section of residents was participating in plogging on Saturdays. Tuesday’s drive would further popularise the exercise.
