The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced the work of laying a service road adjoining the Chennai - Tiruchi national highway at Samayapuram near here to provide direct access to the famous Arulmigu Mariamman Temple in the town.

The ground work for the service road commenced a few days ago after the NHAI readied the blue print for the new project and obtained fund sanction. The service road is to be laid at a cost of Rs. 12 crore heeding to the public demand for a direct access to the temple instead of crossing the highway intersection.

The work of constructing a pipe culvert is presently apace at Samayapuram off the national highway which witnesses heavy density of vehicular movements.

NHAI authorities said three minor bridges would be constructed as part of the project. The authorities say the plan is to complete the new service road within nine months.

The service road would be laid to a total distance of 1.6 kilometre along the left hand side of the Padalur - Tiruchi section of the National Highway 45. Retaining wall would also be constructed to a certain distance under this project along the proposed new service road which would directly lead to the temple, said the authorities.

The service road would be useful for visitors coming to the Samayapuram temple from Chennai and other northern destinations as it would provide them easy and direct access to the temple obviating the need to cross the intersection which at times could prove risky amid heavy movement of vehicles, said the authorities.

New footpath

The NHAI authorities said the work of laying a new footpath on one side along the old Cauvery bridge in Tiruchi was on the verge of completion.

Works on the other side of the bridge would alsso be taken up soon. Similarly, the NHAI has also taken up the work of the construction of a vehicular underpass at Siruvachur along the Tiruchi - Chennai national highway to reduce accidents.
