Work for exclusive bus stand for omni buses in Trichy begins
TRICHY: In a major relief for city commuters struggling to access the congested central bus stand mainly due to the haphazard parking of omni buses, an exclusive bus stand for omni buses is in making.
Around two acres of railway land on Bharathiyar Salai, adjacent to old Thiruvalluvar bus stand and junction road post office is being cleared by a leasee identified by Southern Railways to prepare the space for housing a bus stand exclusively for omni buses.
Parked over the VOC road, Royals road and near Trichy junction RoB, omni buses create a chaos in city traffic during peak hours and weekends. As the private omni bus operators were looking for appropriate space to move their fleets away from central bus stand, a decision taken by southern railways came as a saviour for the bus operators.
Southern Railways focusing on non-fare revenue generation was said to have leased out their two-acre land near old Thiruvalluvar bus stand for a price. “A leasee is identified to prepare the railway land as proposal to make use of the space as omni bus stand is on cards. It is the responsibility of leasee identified to make appropriate arrangements for a bus stand,” an official source with southern railways said.
Sources said that as many as 40 makeshift shops, toilets, and two-wheeler parking lots would be established on the space. With entry and exit points to be made available on Bharathiyar Salai and McDonalds road respectively, works for omni bus stand commenced on Saturday and is likely to conclude in a couple of weeks.
