TRICHY: Citizen for Uyyakondan (CFU), a movement aimed at rejuvenating the centuries-old Uyyakondan canal, completed their 37th consecutive cleanup week along the canal on Sunday.
Today they cleared weeds shrouding the left bank of the Chola-era canal near Kulimikkarai road .

More than 75 medical college students and postal department officials participated, and close to a tonne of inert waste was removed. The waste was disposed of using a vehicle provided by the Trichy Corporation.

Organisers said a walking track would be developed along the cleared stretch.

The canal passing through the city bears rampant pollution. The citizen group has been involved in reviving the Uyyakondan canal since January this year.

Locals from various walks of life, including entrepreneurs and medical professionals have financially supported the revival drive.

“People should come forward to do social works for keeping their vicinity clean. A canal like the Uyyakondan needs revival through public efforts,” said Ebrahim Naik, 96, a World War II veteran participating in the drive.
