Trichy: Rail passengers have requested the rail authorities to add three sleeper class coaches and one AC three-tier coach to the Chennai-Chendur Express to meet the growing crowd on the train. They have also appealed to use surplus ICF coaches available after the conversion of Nellai and Podigai express to LHB coaches.

Chennai-Chendur Express is one of the popular trains on the mainline section. This is the only train that runs from Chennai to Thiruchendur via Trichy, and Thoothukudi. The reservation status always shows waiting list for most of the time because of the growing patronage. The formation of the express train is five unreserved, nine sleeper classes and one 3rd AC, 2nd and first AC each.

The express train passes through the delta districts during night after departing from Chennai in the evening. In the return direction also the express arrives here around 5 pm and reach Chennai early in the morning. So, most of the passengers prefer only sleeper class in both the directions. So, if the railway authorities agree to our demands, we won’t be witnessing overcrowded unreserved compartments anymore, member, DRUCC and advisor of Thanjavur District Rail Users’ Association A Giri said.

“There are a large number of Thiruchendur natives settled in Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai localities. These people are frequently travelling on the express train, and more coaches would surely benefit them,” he said.
