Trichy: Trichy Corporation has prepared a proposal to revamp at least 16 existing parks mostly in and around Rockfort under area-based development in the smart city programme.
The civic body has planned to spruce up decades-old parks by spending Rs 14.21 crore by introducing wide range of amenities to improve availability of public spots and recreational centres for denizens.

In the last two months, smart city proposals from the city corporation have been put on fast-track mode with as many as five projects getting the administrative nod from the high power committee.

As per the park development proposal, 16 parks including Lourdusamy Pillai park, Thiraviam park and Ramasamy park familiar to senior citizens of Big bazaar street and East Boulevard road will get a major facelift.

“Decades-old parks in the cities remain unfamiliar among children today owing to pathetic condition of facilities. Such parks should be redeveloped,” N Ramakrishnan, founding president of MGR Nalpani Mandram said.

As availability of infrastructure for social interaction and physical activities play a crucial role in the annual exercise to rank Indian cities based on liveability index, the civic body said that parks redevelopment was included in the smart city programme. Trichy was ranked 12th in the national liveability index released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Besides providing mandatory provisions such as walking track and stone benches, Trichy Corporation said that modern play area for kids, fountains with decorative lights and maze themed gardens will be established in the 16 parks.

“Slides with various patterns and hanging climbers with ropes will be made available to attract children to the parks. Similarly, wider walking tracks to enable movement of walkers on either direction, exercise zones proposed in the parks will attract adults,” an official source with the corporation said.

Officials added that toilets and eco-friendly lighting system would be established as a part of refurbishment works. The civic body has planned to float a tender by October for identifying a suitable contractor to commence and complete the redevelopment works within February-March 2019.
