More than three months after it started renovation work on laying a new footpath on old Cauvery bridge here, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed it on one side of the bridge.

About 2,500 reinforced concrete slabs have been laid in place of the old and worn out slabs. Work would be taken up on the other side before this month. The total cost of laying the new footpath on both sides of the over 50-year-old bridge is Rs. 50 lakh.

The NHAI took up the work following a tragedy that occurred at night in April when a woman on a padayatra with her relatives to Samayapuram Mariamman Temple near here fell into the dry riverbed after worn out slabs on the footpath suddenly caved in.

The middle-aged woman died on the spot. The woman's daughter, who went to her rescue also fell from the bridge without noticing the worn out slabs.
