Compost your domestic waste and win gold coins

The Tiruchi Corporation has decided to reward city residents, who successfully compost their organic waste in their households, with gold coins.

Inaugurating a workshop on Swachh Survekshan 2019 here on Saturday, Corporation Commissioner-cum-Special Officer N. Ravichandran said three residents would be given gold coins of one gram each every week.

Recently, the Corporation has started promoting a system of composting household organic waste using PVC pipes buried in the backyard of households.

To participate in the competition, the residents would have to download the Tiruchi Corporation's mobile App and post the details of their home composting efforts. Based on it, the officials would visit the concerned house to check the functioning of the system. If it was found to be functioning well, the resident would be rewarded with a gold coin. A draw of lot would be conducted to select the winners if more than three persons participated. The scheme was mainly to encourage residents to set up home composting, he said.

The Corporation is already running a prize scheme for residents handing over their segregated domestic waste to civic workers.

Mr. Ravichandran also disclosed that the civic body has decided to launch a QR code based collection of garbage from residents. It would be launched in the 56th ward within a few days on pilot basis and would be extended to all wards within a few months. It would enable the officials to track and monitor the collection of household garbage.

Releasing a poster for the Swachh Survekshan 2019 campaign, Mr. Ravichandran said the Central government had introduced a star rating competition among the civic bodies for clearing the dump yards. Out of 5,000 marks in Swachh Survekshan 2019, 1000 marks have been earmarked for bio remediation of dump yards. As per the current performance on clearing garbage dumped in dump yards, the Tiruchi city has qualified for 3-star rating.

However, the Corporation was working on getting at least 5-star rating out of the 7 stars. The Corporation would give a push on reclamation of land at Ariyamangalam dump yard by introducing a few more bio remediation measures.

He also disclosed that the civic body would build 4,100 more individual household toilets within four months. The Corporation had constructed 4,000 individual household toilets in the city in 2017-18. Identification of beneficiaries was on and the construction would be completed within January. The officials have been asked to expedite the construction works ahead of North East monsoon season. New toilets in individual households would improve the overall sanitary condition in the city.
