Trichy: The redevelopment of the Chathiram bus stand falling under the area-based development in the smart city programme has received administrative sanction form a high power committee. The civic body will revamp the 2.05acre bus stand complex, exclusive for city buses, at an estimated cost of Rs 17.34 crore to ease the prevailing traffic congestion.
After four proposals, namely heritage tourism development in six spots, multi-level car parking (MLCP) on West Boulevard Road, Uyyakondan river front development, and bio-mining in Ariyamangalam dump yard, Trichy Smart City Limited (TSCL) managed to get administrative nod for redevelopment of Chathiram bus stand.

As many as 225 city buses, including 135 private fleets, have been connecting the bus stand -- classified under category D bus stand -- with various parts of the city and suburbs.

However, the narrow approach roads to the bus stand coupled with absence of space for mofussil buses have been causing frequent traffic snarls. To address the issue, the civic body has mooted a plan to redevelop Chathiram bus stand into a multilevel complex by establishing two terminals for buses with each having a capacity to accommodate 15 bus bays.

“The proposed model is the best that can be done since space constraint is there to implement futuristic ideas. As many as 30 bus bays will be established through the proposal,” said corporation commissioner N Ravichandran. It will also have a facility to park 350 two-wheelers.

Apart from decongesting the locality, officials said that Corporation will rent out as many as 28 shop spaces and a food court to generate ample revenue from bus stand. Eight sanitary complexes will be established as a part of the redevelopment plan.

“We will identify a contractor to implement the proposal soon after obtaining technical sanction from the high power committee,” Ravichandran added.
