The State finals of Wiz National Spell Bee competition at Samadh Senior Secondary School on Sunday witnessed enthusiastic participation of students from leading schools from across Tamil Nadu.

The competition — conducted with a new approach of combining learning with fun — enhanced the spelling and literary skills of children.

Exploring the language

The students were encouraged to explore the English language, expand their vocabulary, and improve their communication and comprehension skills, according to Yasmin Banu, Co-ordinator, English Wizard Foundation.

By taking up the convenient and comprehensive language development programme, students compete, learn, and develop their language skills to progress at their own pace needed for academic success, the coordinator said.

Every participant was given a ‘Word Bank’ preparatory booklet prepared by a panel of English teachers and academicians. The words were graded according to their age and class, Ms. Yasmin Banu said.

Pronunciation

The contestants participated in oral and pronunciation key rounds. The oral round required the student to spell aloud the words given to them from a predetermined list.

The round was conducted on a miss-and-out basis. Those who misspelt a word from the sixth word onwards were eliminated.

Pronunciation key round was a slide show. The contestant identified the words, spelt them, and conveyed the meanings based on phonetic symbols in the time-bound test.

The ranking was made based on their performance on that particular day.

The competition starting at school level progresses to the National Level through the inter-school and state level competitions.

Winners of the state grand finale, who will participate in the national finals to be held in December at Kolkata, were chosen under six categories: 1 (std 1), 2 (std. 2), 3 and 4 (std. 3). 5 & 6 (std. 4), 7 & 8 (std. 5), 9, 10, 11 and 12 (std. 6).
