RFID tag soon at Tiruchi GH to prevent child theft

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital attached to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College here will soon have radio frequency identification (RFID) system for tagging new born babies and mothers so as to check abduction of infants.

Under the system, the hospital authorities will attach RFID tags to baby and mother immediately after the delivery. It will be done in the presence of their relatives. The tags will have the details of baby and mother. If the baby, who is tagged, is taken away from the mother, an automatic alarm will be raised in order to alert mother and hospital security personnel.

G. Anitha, Dean of the hospital, told The Hindu that a sum of Rs. 23 lakh would be spent for introducing the RFID system.

“It will be installed at all entrances of the neo-natal intensive care ward and post operative ward. If anyone tries to take away the baby out of the ward, the system will sound an alarm so as to alert mother and hospital staff. The feasibility study for installing the system has already been done. The installation work will begin soon,” she said.
