Ministers, officials inspect canals in Tiruchi, Thanjavur

With farmers complaining over lack of water flow to tail-end areas of irrigation canals in Tiruchi and delta region, Ministers and officials fanned out to different parts of Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts on Tuesday to check the flow in various canals.

In Tiruchi, Vellamandi N. Natarajan, Minister for Tourism, and S. Valarmathi, Minister for Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, accompanied by Collector K.Rajamani and senior public works department officials, inspected some of the canals and irrigation tanks. They inspected various places including the Kattalai High Level Canal (KHLC), New KHLC, Punganur, Koothapar and Vazhavanthankottai tanks.

Mr. Natarajan told reporters that release of water into irrigation canals from Mayanur barrage would be stepped up and all tanks and lakes would be filled within the next few days. Forty-five of the 75 system tanks had filled up. Steps were also being taken to ensure adequate flow of water to tail-end areas. He also assured steps to develop Koothapar tank as a picnic spot.

In Thanjavur, Collector A. Annadurai, after inspection, announced that water had been released to the Uyyakondan extension canal and tail-end areas of NKHLC. He inspected the release of water into the two canals and enquired with PWD officials on the quantum of water supply in them.
