TRICHY: The city police announced on Friday that it’s mandatory for pillion riders of two-wheelers to wear helmet with immediate effect, following the Madras high court order to the state police to strictly enforce the rule.

City police commissioner A Amalraj stated that the violators – including the rider and the pillion rider – would be booked under section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

It may be recalled that the enforcement of helmet rule has been followed strictly ever since Amalraj took charge as the city commissioner in November 2017. Post his appointment, it was said that on an average, as many as 1,700 motorists were booked for violating the rule on a daily basis.

It was only in March and April this year, the action on helmet violation has brought down after a woman, Usha, was killed in a road accident in the outskirts of Trichy. She allegedly died after a police inspector kicked the bike in which she was travelling pillion with her husband, who did not stop the bike during a vehicle check for helmet violation. The incident, which happened on March 7, caused huge public outrage.

This recent enforcement is likely to evoke a negative response among many people, as the practice of pillion-riders wearing helmets is hardly existent in the city.
