End Race Course Road widening before rain

Trichy: Alleging that delay in completing the Race Course road widening works has been causing inconvenience to motorists visiting government and private institutes close in Khajamalai, residents have urged the highways department to complete the pending works before the onset of the monsoon.
While stating that most of the works have been completed, the state highways department said that the widening works would be over in two months.

The highways department took up the widening of the road to 10.5m (from the existing 7m) citing the prominence of Race course road with educational institutions, district sports complex (Anna stadium) and the DIG’s office. Work began on the stretch from TWAD sewage treatment plant till the government law college four months back.

“The Race Course road leading to Anna stadium has been undergoing works for three months now. Because of this, the stretch has become non-motorable. It would be wise if authorities complete the work in a stipulated period,” said S Deepak, resident of Khajamalai.

Residents also lamented that the widening project did not have a proper plan for storm water drainage. “The absence of storm water drain along the widened roads will only inundate the low-lying areas along Race Course road close to TWAD’s sewage treatment plant complex,” said H Ubaidullah, resident of KK Nagar.

When contacted, officials with highways department said that widening project has been expedited and would be completed in two months span.
