Bumpy roads add to woes of shopping hubs in city
Trichy: While most of the arterial roads in the city have only the problem of low light during night, it is a double whammy for Sasthri Road and Karur Bypass Road. The two arterial roads, which are emerging as hubs of fashion stores and eateries, have been peppered with potholes. Adding to the woes is the poor condition of street lights.
Though many brands have opened their outlets along the streets attracting more vehicles, the two arterial roads continue to be in bad shape for years now. While the roads in and around Cantonment had a facelift at an estimated cost of Rs11.6 crore last year, the two roads remain neglected of late.
“There are several theatres close to the Karur Bypass Road, and the public movement is always high. If not a new road, at least the potholes should be fixed,” S Gurubaran, resident of Annamalai Nagar, said. The residents also alleged that the area between Annamalai Nagar and Karur Bypass Road junction were poorly lit.
Bad condition of Sasthri Road and Karur Bypass Road were also cited as a reason for traffic congestion in the area. The commercial outlets attract a lot of people to the area, but the pedestrian platforms in both the roads are encroached or damaged.
“Sasthri Road and Karur Bypass Road are among the stretches identified for development under the Smart City programme. Once we get the approval, the two arterial roads will be developed. Underground ducts will also be set up to enable cables to pass through,” a senior official from Trichy Corporation said.
The civic body also added that drainage system on the roads will be streamlined under the smart city programme.
