Trichy: With multiple lapses in documenting the initiatives taken up by the corporation cited as the reason for the city slipping from rank 6 to 13 in the Swachh Survekshan 2018, a senior official of MoHUA said that the civic body must document its activities properly. The regional workshop to familiarise star rating of garbage-free cities held in Trichy on Friday saw the ministry officials appreciating Trichy’s innovative efforts in solid waste management practices.
To promote the evaluation of star rating of garbage-free cities, MoHUA and Commissionerate of Municipal Administration (CMA) conducted a workshop for civic body officials in the central and eastern districts at Trichy. The 16th of 17 regional workshops planned by Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) saw more than 250 civic body officials from Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode and Thanjavur as well as town panchayats in Thanjavur region being briefed about the 12 parameters considered for the proposed star rating.

As the participants were explained about the focus area of the rating system, J B Ravinder, joint adviser (public health and environment engineering) from MoHUA, said, “Trichy has been consistently losing its rank as it was once the third cleanest city of the country. I request the civic bodies to document all the SWM efforts properly to score ample marks. Losing even a single mark will be costly as the competition is tough among the cities now.” The senior official asserted that Trichy had every possibility of scoring 5-star rating and urged the corporation to work for reclaiming the dump yard to achieve 7-star rating.

Explaining the preparations taken by the civic body, corporation commissioner N Ravichandran said, “We have managed to create immense awareness among the public about waste segregation and door-to-door waste collection. With persistent efforts taken by the civic body in making Trichy the cleanest city in the state, we are sure about achieving the best rating in the proposed star rating of garbage-free cities.” The participant officials from civic bodies in central and eastern districts were explained how the star rating would be carried out. Unlike Swachh Survekshan that focuses on solid waste management, officials said that star rating framework would consider the existing condition of stormwater drains and water bodies.
