There is a spurt in the number of people in Trichy availing an amnesty scheme to regularise unapproved plots after the Tamil Nadu government recently extended the deadline by another six months. The Trichy City Corporation has collected Rs 4.5 crore as development charge for regularisation of 590 plots so far.
The corporation recently conducted special camps to reach out to more people who wanted to regularise their unapproved plots. The civic body is planning to conduct more such camps before the November deadline.

“The special camps to regularise the unapproved plots held last week witnessed good response from people living on the city outskirts like Ariyamangalam, E Pudur and Srirangam. Since the awareness among locals to regularise their plots is picking up, we have planned to conduct yet another special camp this weekend (July 6 & 7),” a senior corporation official told TOI.
In May last year, the state government rolled out the Tamil Nadu Registration of Unapproved Layouts and Plot Rules 2017. The government said layouts authorised by Local Planning Authority (LPA) could be regularised by local bodies concerned.
According to official sources, there are around 20,000 unproved plots in Trichy. Most of them are in the wards that were added to city limits in 2011.
The corporation is collecting Rs 500 per square metre as development charge for regularisation whereas the state government charges Rs 100 per square metre as regularisation charge.
