The Thanjavur District Rail Users' Association has appealed to the Southern Railway administration to operate a new overnight daily express train from Mayiladuthurai to Coimbatore via Kumbakonam and Tiruchi.

In a memorandum to the Principal Chief Operations Manager, Southern Railway, the association's advisor A. Giri said the demand for operating a link express of the Chemmozhi Express up to Mayiladuthurai has been denied owing to the Railway Board’s old policy decision.

Hence, the railway administration could operate a new overnight daily express train between Mayiladuthurai and Coimbatore via Kumbakonam and Tiruchi, Mr. Giri said.

A strong demand also exists for a direct train from Thanjavur to Mumbai CST.

Capt. Tamilselvan, MLA of Sion-Koliwada constituency in Maharashtra had also made an appeal in this regard earlier. The railway administration could introduce a new bi-weekly express train service between Thanjavur and Mumbai via Kumbakonam, Villupuram, Renigunta, Mantralayam Road and Pune, he said.

The association said the departure timing of Train No. 16866 Thanjavur - Chennai Egmore Uzhavan Express could be delayed to leave Thanjavur Junction at 10.15 p.m. to reach Chennai at around 5.30 a.m. With the diversion of the Mannai Express via Tiruvarur, the late departure of the Uzhavan Express would be useful for passengers of Thanjavur, Papanasam and Kumbakonam.

Following the diversion of the Mannai Express via Tiruvarur, passengers of Papanasam were left with the lone choice of having to travel in Uzhavan Express to reach Chennai. Hence, the Rameswaram- Chennai Boat Mail could be provided with a stoppage at Papanasam in lieu of the diverted Mannai express, the association said.
