Movement of parcels through rail is poised to improve further with the Southern Railway administration opening parcel traffic in eight more stations falling within the jurisdiction of Tiruchi Railway Division. The opening of inward and outward parcel traffic has come into immediate effect at the chosen stations.

The stations where parcel traffic has been opened are Panruti, Tiruppadiripuliyur Chidambaram, Sirkazhi - all falling along the Villupuram - Tiruchi (via Thanjavur) main line section besides Vellore Cantonment, Chinnababusamudram and Pattukottai near Thanjavur.

The decision has been taken in view of public demand, said a senior railway official here.

Railway officials expect robust movement of parcel traffic at these stations and more so at Chidambaram since it was a major tourism and pilgrim destination in Tiruchi division besides being an educational centre.

The opening of parcel traffic would enable public to book different types of parcels including vegetables and marine products meant for shorter and longer destinations from the chosen stations, the official said.

This would augment revenue for Tiruchi Railway Division. Separate railway parcel offices currently functions at 11 major stations in Tiruchi Division including Tiruchi, Villupuram, Cuddalore Port Junction, Puducherry, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Nagapattinam.

The official said the parcel traffic movement in the eight stations would be reviewed in the next six months.
