Over 80 Ramji Nagar shops, houses witness either eviction or demolition
More than 80 shops and houses which had encroached on the roads at Ramji Nagar were either demolished or its owners evicted by the highways department on Saturday. He had directed the highways department, corporation and officials concerned to evict the encroachments in tank (water body) poromboke land, in state and national highways etc.
In fact, over the past few days, eviction was carried out at several areas in and around the city, including the Pudukottai Road. Despite opposition from a few locals, officials retrieved five to 20 feet of motorable space on the stretch.With the help of heavy machinery and police protection, officials of the department removed the encroachment for a three-km stretch.According to an official from the highways department, the eviction drive was conducted as per the direction of district collector K Rajamani.
The highways department had intimated the residents and shop owners at Ramji Nagar regarding eviction a month agoand they had been consistently notifying the locals over the past five days before eventually evicting them from the encroached land on Saturday.A source from the highways department also said that they would be conducting eviction at Kothamangalam road by next week.Eviction drive is being held by several departments in the city after Rajamani conducted a meeting regarding the same a couple of weeks ago
