A team of students from K Ramakrishnan College of Engineering (KRCE) in Trichy, who are building a motorcycle (a racing prototype), are set to feature it in the MotoStudent competition at Alcañiz in Spain this October.
The motorcycle would be taking part in a final race at the MotorLand Aragón Circuit in Alcañiz. The students from KRCE will be competing in the MotoStudent Petrol (internal combustion engine) category.
More than 70 teams from 17 countries are participating in the event.
The nine-member team, ‘Solemade Racing’, comprises M Varun Rajan, E Suriya, K Shanmuganathan, P Rajendran and A Kumaresan from mechanical engineering, C Vaishnavi and S Sushanthi Sugi from ECE department and P Perinbaraj and V R Rejoe from EEE department.
While the mechanical engineering department has been working on the design and fabrication, the ECE and EEE students are taking care of the electronic control unit (ECU) and wiring harness of the bike respectively.
The bike is equipped with four-stroke liquid cooled engine (KTM RC engine) with 248.88cc and maximum power of 30.87 horsepower. The designing of the motorcycle has been completed and the students are currently working on its fabrication, which is expected to be completed by the end of August. Following this, the bike would be tested in racing circuits in Chennai and Coimbatore. Motorcycle racer Naresh Prabhu from Chennai would be riding the bike in the final race.

The students said that they started working on the project from last August. “Apart from the engine, rim, tyre and brakes – which were given by the organisers – our team worked on designing the bike from scratch,” team member, E Suriya from the mechanical department told TOI.
According to the students, fabrication of the bike, though, is proving to be an issue due to lack of funding. “Since it’s an international competition, we have to build the bike in as high standard as possible and we’ve to import certain parts from Japan. Lack of funding is causing a minor delay in our schedule,” another team member, C Vaishnavi from the ECE department said.
MotoStudent, which is set to start on October 3, is conducted by Moto Engineering Foundation and TechnoPark MotorLand.
In the first phase of the competition, the projects would be judged from the industrial point of view, while in the second phase, the motorbikes will be tested in order to determine their safety and functionality. The tournament will be concluded with the race at the MotorLand Aragón Circuit. Two other institutions from TN, Vellore Institute of Technology and SRM University are also said to be participating in the event.
