As barricades go, it’s chaos near Trichy junction RoB

RoB has backfired with vehicles plying on either direction resulting in traffic congestion. Earlier, the presence of barricades had helped restrict the movement of vehicles from Mannarpuram roundabout and redirect the incoming vehicles to use a service road to reach Crawford, E Pudur and railway junction parts of city.

Considered as one of the gateways to Trichy city, Mannarpuram roundabout is the first point that vehicles coming from Madurai and other southern districts face. The stretch which connects the city with its outskirts would see vehicular movement round-the-clock. With the Chennai arm of Trichy junction RoB incomplete, vehicles entering Trichy from Mannarpuram roundabout to reach Crawford, E Pudur and also Trichy junction were using the service lane of RoB close to special police battalion quarters. On the other hand, vehicles heading towards Mannarpuram and Khajamalai from Crawford, E Pudur and junction were utilising the service road close to the railway colony compound.

Things were going fine until the city police, based on the instructions of the Road Safety Council, removed the barricades that were streamlining the vehicular movement. “A barricade placed over the road linking Trichy junction RoB and Mannarpuram was removed a few days ago. Due to this, vehicles entering and leaving the city are accessing the same stretch close to railway colony resulting in congestion and bottleneck. But the other service lane remains under-utilised,” H Ghouse Baig, a resident of E Pudur, said.

Besides traffic congestion, the removal of barricades that were successfully redirecting vehicles entering the city to take the service lane close to police quarters has jeopardised the safety of commuters with speeding buses approaching the service lane close to the railway colony from wrong direction. “The barricades were removed based on a suggestion from the road safety council. We will monitor the stretch and if needed a traffic constable will be posted,” a senior police officer said. Road safety council also said that the demand for carrying out patchwork on the required spots across the stretch between Mannarpuram and Trichy junction RoB would be taken up with the highways department again.
