Trichy Corporation aiming to plant one lakh saplings before next World Environment Day

The Trichy Corporation on Tuesday launched an initiative to plant one lakh saplings across the city before the next year’s World Environment Day.


The civic body has entrusted junior engineers (JEs) to identify volunteers for planting and maintaining saplings in all the 65 wards of city. As many as 6,500 saplings will be distributed in the next couple of weeks.
“One lakh trees across 65 wards is our target before celebrating the next World Environment Day. Corporation JEs have been instructed to identify interested residents for raising and maintaining the saplings,” corporation commissioner N Ravichandran said.
The civic body recently established nurseries in Srirangam and on the EB road to produce six lakh native saplings, ornamental shrubs and flowering plants per year. The corporation is planning to make use of these nurseries to increase city’s green cover.
On Tuesday, saplings cultured in corporation-run nurseries were distributed to school children. Similarly, saplings of native tree breeds, including neem, were planted in the district court complex.
