Upset over the steep hike, effected after a private firm got the permission from the Southern Railway to collect rent from traders for using its space, a large number of traders thronged the weekly market and staged a protest.

Though Sunday was supposed to be the brisk business day, particularly for vegetables, fruits and grocery sellers, no one came forward to transact business as a mark of registering their protest.

They said that rent for selling vegetables on pavement shops in the market had been increased manifold.

Similarly, the rent for all types of traders including hawkers had been increased without any rationale. It had posed a serious livelihood threat as they could not earn more than towards paying rent for the pavement shops.

They added that though about 300 sellers had submitted a memorandum to the officials at the office of Divisional Railway Manager a few days ago, no action had been taken to solve the issue.

They would continue to stage protest until a solution was found.

Meanwhile, leaders of various political parties, including P. Kumar, Member of Parliament, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Members of Legislative Assembly, Jawahar, president, District Congress Committee (Tiruchi Urban) and others, met the protesters and offered support to them.
