The Tiruch City Corporation has opened its second nursery on East Boulevard Road in Ariyamangalam zone in the city.

It has been created in about three-fourth acre of land with the technical guidance of the Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women in Tiruchi, a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. A poly house and a mist chamber have been set up to maintain suitable temperature for the seedlings to be raised. A sum of Rs. 20 lakh has been spent for the project.

Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran, who inaugurated the nursery said that it had a capacity to raise one lakh saplings for every three months. It could raise about four lakh saplings a year. Both flowering trees and fruit bearing saplings would be grown.

With the new nursery, the number of nurseries owned by the Corporation would go up to two. The first nursery opened at Ambedkar Nagar in Srirangam could raise four lakh saplings a year in four-cycle. With two nurseries, the Corporation could raise 8 lakh saplings a year. It would enable the Corporation to plant saplings in the city and along Central medians. Fruit-bearing plants would be distributed to interested citizens on nominal charges. Resident welfare associations and citizens forums could get saplings free of cost to raise trees along streets, on flat premises and houses.
