The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will soon commence the work of laying a service road off the national highway at Samayapuram a few kilometres from here for the benefit of pilgrims visiting the famed Arulmigu Mariamman Temple.

The 'bhoomi pooja,' ahead of laying the service road to a length of 1.6 kilometres leading to the temple, was conducted a few days ago at the proposed location.

The service road would come up off the Tiruchi - Chennai National Highway to provide easy access to the temple for those coming from Chennai and other northern direction thereby preventing any accident at the highway intersections, said NHAI authorities here.

The NHAI has drawn up the blue print of the proposed service road as part of which three minor bridges would be constructed along the stretch. The official said the work would be executed at a cost of Rs. 12 crore. The service road work is expected to be completed in early 2019, said the official.

The service road would come up on the left hand side along the Padalur - Tiruchi stretch of the Chennai - Tiruchi National Highway. The road would be laid from kilometre 308.131 to kilometre 309.721 with a retaining wall and drain wherever required, said the official adding that the new road was being constructed based on public demand.

The main benefit for the pilgrims is the safety aspect as the service road would directly lead them to the temple. The pilgrims need not cross the median to reach the other carriageway which sometimes led to accidents on the highway.

The work will be executed at a cost of Rs. 12 crore and it is expected to be completed in early 2019
