Foot overbridge partially opened at Tiruchi railway junction

Train travellers can now access various platforms at Tiruchi Railway Junction without much hassle as a newly constructed foot overbridge has been partially opened.

The steel foot overbridge has been thrown open up to platform 5 at Tiruchi Junction — a major station in Southern Railway zone. Works on connecting the remaining platforms 6 and 7 and its extension up to the station’s second entry side at Kallukuzhi is under way.

The Southern Railway Construction Organisation is executing the foot overbridge project at a cost of around Rs. 5 crore. It is more than a year since the works commenced with the project getting expedited only in 2017.

The foot-over-bridge is end-to-end from the parcel office located close to the main entrance of the station and extending up to the Kallukuzhi second entry to cover all seven platforms.

A senior official of Southern Railway Construction Organisation here said the foot overbridge had been partially opened up to platform 5 for movement of passengers. Side grills had been provided along the concrete path on the foot overbridge up to platform 5 as a safety measure.

Works to cover the remaining platforms 6 and 7 were in progress. The main girder had been erected, with works relating to laying a concrete path with tiles, erecting roof, landing point and electrical works pending. It would take at least six months to complete the remaining portion, the official said.

The foot overbridge was constructed to provide an alternative to the existing subway connecting all seven platforms.

The subway gets congested during peak hours when trains are accommodated in other platforms or started from there.

The official said the partially opened foot overbridge covered those platforms where many trains arrived or operated from there.
