Efforts to make Tiruchi child labour-free, says Collector

All out efforts were being made to make the district child labour-free, Collector K. Rajamani said here on Tuesday.

Speaking after flagging of an awareness rally against child labour organised under the National Child Labour Project-CHEERS on the occasion of the Anti Child Labour Day, Mr. Rajamani said as many as 634 child labourers were identified and enrolled in schools during 2017-18 in the district.

Academic support was also being extended to the main streamed former child labourers while they appear for the SSLC and Plus Two public examinations. During the current year, a special awareness drive would be taken up against child labour in a full-fledged manner, he said and cautioned traders and business establishments against employment children below 14 years of age.

A large number of students participated in the rally which commenced from the St. John’s Vestry Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School campus and culminated near the Tiruchi Corporation office.

Mr. Rajamani also inaugurated a signature campaign against child labour on the occasion.
